  1. Compromised Account
    & Account Security

    FAQ

This thread is a FAQ on most recent questions asked regarding Account Security and Compromised Accounts, for use mainly inside appeals but also general knowledge concerning Account Security.

The thread is split into 3 parts, followed by "How to" lists:

    - Securing Unmigrated Accounts
    - Securing Migrated Accounts (mojang.com accounts)
    - Providing Evidence

Please be sure to read over every section that may be applicable to your case.
We also recommend you ask your Parent/Guardian to read over the thread if there is anything you don't understand.

/!\ Note that Mineplex is not part of the Mojang team, and is unable to help you out with Mojang-related issues.

Also, note that if your appeal has been cancelled by a Staff Member who provided you with an "Appeal Cancelled" message, you are free to re-appeal without waiting a 30 day period.

    Unmigrated Accounts
    (Older Minecraft Premium Accounts)

These are identified by you having to use the Account's username to log in to the account, when logging into your client. If you use an email to log in, please scroll down to "Migrated Accounts".

If your account is Unmigrated, we highly recommend you migrate your account by following the steps provided below.

    How to Change Password?
Please go to http://minecraft.net/resetpassword, and proceed to type your username in the "Username" box:

    Next, click the "Submit" button.
From here, you will be sent an e-mail to the e-mail address you registered your account to, with appropriate instructions to change the password.

The e-mail you receive should look along the lines of this, and you will simply need to click the link provided and follow the steps you see:

/!\ If you cannot seem to be able to receive an e-mail back from the Mojang system, please check out Mojang's FAQ regarding this issue here: https://help.mojang.com/customer/portal/articles/542001

    How to Migrate?

We highly recommend you migrate your Minecraft Premium account to a full Mojang account, and if you like, make use of all the security features they offer.

To migrate your old account, you will need to go to http://account.mojang.com/migrate, which will lead you to this page:

Just fill in your Old Email, Username, Password and the E-mail you wish to use for your account as well as your Date of Birth, and read over the Tems And Conditions, then click the button to Migrate the account.

Once migrated, you will be required to log in to Minecraft using your e-mail, instead of your Minecraft Username. But your account will have some extra security.

/!\ Please check out the following Mojang article if you experience any further issues migrating your account:

Or check out this article for further details on the benefits of a migrated account:

How do I change my email address?
As quoted from Mojang's own Support site:

You can change your email address by migrating your Minecraft account to a Mojang account, as already explained above.

If you already have a Mojang account with your new email address, first log into your Mojang account at https://account.mojang.com/login and then go to http://account.mojang.com/migrate/import to import your existing Minecraft username.

I forgot my original Email, how do I change it?
As quoted from Mojang's own Support site:

In the event that you do not have access to or have forgotten the email address you originally registered with, Mojang can migrate the account for you if you follow their steps:

    Migrated Accounts
    (Mojang Accounts)

These are identified by requiring an email address to log in to the account rather than your username. If you use your username to log in, scroll up to "Unmigrated Accounts".

    How to Change Password?

    - If you still have access to your account (By logging in to it via Mojang):

Log in to your account at https://account.mojang.com/login.

Once logged in, go to https://account.mojang.com/me/settings. Here, you will see the following page:

Please proceed to click the "Edit" next to "Password" to change the password, which will make the "Password" box extend and ask for your new password, as well as your old one, as shown here:

From here, the process should be self-explanatory.
Choose a new password, and confirm the change by providing your current password.

    - If you lost access to the account (E.g. you forgot your current password):

If you are unable to log in to your account at https://account.mojang.com/login, or just go to https://account.mojang.com/password directly to reset your password.

You will find yourself on the "Reset Password" page. Just type in whatever Email your Minecraft account was registered on, and click the "Request Password Reset" button:

Now, log in to the email address you have sent the request to. The email from Mojang about the password change should come in fairly quickly. For example, in Gmail it will look like this:

Inside the email itself you will find a password reset link similar to this, please just click it and proceed to follow the steps provided to change your password.

    It's really self-explanatory from here.

/!\ If you cannot seem to be able to receive an e-mail back from the Mojang system, please check out Mojang's FAQ regarding this issue here: https://help.mojang.com/customer/portal/articles/542001

    Providing Evidence

This final part of the thread goes over the evidence you need to provide in your appeal if you were punished for the in-game displayed reason of "Compromised Account" or "Bot Spam". This includes elaboration on what evidence you need to provide, and how to capture and upload your evidence.

    What Evidence do I Provide?
(For Punishments that say "Compromised Account"/"Bot Spam" in the punishment reason)
We require you to provide very specific evidence of password change in your Appeal if your account was Officially Compromised.

In you will need to provide us with:

    1) Evidence of Account Ownership
    2) Evidence of Password Change

    1) Proof of Account Ownership

We will need a full screenshot of the following details lined out in a red box, which you can find back on your account.mojang.com/me page after logging in, as shown here:

The information inside the red boxes is crucial and may not be edited out under any circumstances. We require the line mentioning your email to be visible in this screenshot.
Please remember that Appeals are private to our Appeals Team only, and will not be distributed by us outside of the Appeals Team under any circumstances.

    2) Proof of Password Change

Secondly, we will need proof that you indeed changed the password to your compromised account, and thereby secured your account. You can do so at account.mojang.com/me/settings, and your screenshot should contain the following information:

Please remember to fully provide your email in both screenshots.

You may edit out your Name and Birth Date for privacy reasons, but are not required to do so. None of your information will not be given out to any outsiders under any circumstances, and is only used to confirm your account to be secure.

If you fail to provide both screenshots containing information as requested above, your appeal will be cancelled.

    How to Take a Screenshot?
    - Using the Default prntscr key (Or whatever else is the default screenshot key for your system)

There are multiple ways you can get a screenshot of your password change. Most computers have a built-in screenshot hotkey ("prntscr") that will screenshot your monitor when pressed:

This button may usually be found back at the top of the keyboard and a small notification box should pop up if it takes the screenshot, which will link you to either the actual screenshot or the folder it was put in.

If that is the case, drag the images out of the folder and put it (for example) on your desktop. You are free to open it in whatever Photo editing software available (If on Windows, try right-clicking it and "Opening it in Paint"), and take out your real name and date of birth for privacy reasons.

For MAC users, refer to this Apple Support Guide instead:
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201361

Please make sure you do provide all the required details that you can find back in the sections above.

    - Using Gyazo (Download)

This is a download, but it comes quite handy and is fairly user-friendly and very easy to use. Download "Gyazo" at this link: https://gyazo.com/

And it will install two new shortcuts onto your desktop, or wherever you decide to put it:

"Gyazo" will allow you to click and drag over the area you want to screenshot, then open your screenshot in a new tab. "Gyazo GIF" will allow you to do the same as the above, but make animated ".gif" pictures of your screenshots. Ex:

From this new tab with your fresh screenshot, you can either send it to us instantly, right-click the image, edit it and upload it to one of the recommended image hosting sites linked below or re-screenshot the images once more, and copy the link in your appeal.

You are free to open it in whatever Photo editing software available (If on Windows, try right-clicking it and "Opening it in Paint"), and take out your real name and date of birth for privacy reasons.

Please make sure you do provide all the required details that you can find back in the sections above.

    - Using LightShot (Download)

This is also a download, but it comes quite handy and is fairly user-friendly and very easy to use. Download "LightShot" at this link: https://app.prntscr.com

Once installed, you can look it up on your system and put it on your desktop, or in your Toolbar:

By default, it will activate if you click "prntscr" or if you click your shortcut.
Much alike "Gyazo" will it allow you to drag over the area you want to screenshot, screenshot it and open your screenshot in a new tab in your browser.

You can also use it to edit your screenshots directly using LightShot's vertically provided edit tools. To directly upload your screenshot for use in your appeal, you will need to click this button:
(wait a few seconds if the are below is completely white)

Once your screenshot is uploaded to their server, you will get this link to the image in the bottom right corner of your screen:

You are free to open it in whatever Photo editing software available (If on Windows, try right-clicking it and "Opening it in Paint"), and take out your real name and date of birth for privacy reasons.

Please make sure you do provide all the required details that you can find back in the sections above.

    - Using Puush (Download)

This is also a downloadable application. But again, this one is also quite handy to use, and its use can extend to multiple types of file uploads rather than just screenshots, while still retaining that Screenshot feature. Download "Puush" at this link: http://puush.me/

Once installed, you can look it up on your system and put it on your desktop, or in your Toolbar:

While puush has many options and ways of being used, to stick to the simple screenshotting function for Appeals. Activate the app by clicking on it once, then look it up in your "running apps" window on your Toolbar/Taskbar. It will appear as a white arrow:

Once you've located this icon, richt-click it with your mouse, and select either "Capture Current Window", "Capture Desktop" or "Capture Area...". If your screenshot was taken successfully, a Notification alerting you of this should appear in your bottom right corner of your screen along with a link to the image:

You can open the link by simply left-clicking on the Notification, then copying the link for further use.

You are free to save the image and re-open it in whatever Photo editing software available (If on Windows, try right-clicking it and "Opening it in Paint"), and take out your real name and date of birth for privacy reasons.

Please make sure you do provide all the required details that you can find back in the sections above.

    Where/How To Upload My Evidence?
If you made use of Gyazo/LightShot/Puush as explained above, your screenshot should have automatically been uploaded to the internet. Use the link they provided above in your appeal by copy-and-pasting it into the boxes for the evidence.

As for sites you can use to upload your evidence to if your evidence wasn't yet uploaded to the internet, here's our list of approved image uploading sites. How to upload your images to them is explained on the sites themselves.
Other sites not listed such as imgur are not necessarily unsafe to use, but many users have accidentally made their private information public to the imgur gallery which is something we'd like to avoid by limiting this list to a few more private platforms, without a public gallery.

You may use different sites to upload your evidence, but do so at your own risk.

/!\ Also, your evidence may not be a download link. It must be visible in the browser.

How To Link My Evidence In My Appeal?
You will have to link your evidence in your appeal by copy-and-pasting the two individual image links into your appeal. You will notice the links will not automatically become clickable upon submission of your appeal, which is completely normal. As long as we are able to select and paste the link in our search bar your link should do.

If possible, try to check if your links work correctly in advance.
